Berlin – Day 1

By Ruben McCarthy

The first day of the Berlin study trip started off with a walking tour around the city, where we saw many landmarks and learned about a lot of history along the way. It felt surreal to see so many places up close that I’d only seen and heard about in books and documentaries. Learning more about the Berlin wall and the rapid changes that occurred when it fell, sparked a few ideas for the project that we have to hand in for the study tour.

A journalistic learning point of the day would be to double check the address of destinations – as we ended up in the wrong university for a photojournalism workshop, where slight chaos ensued trying to get to the right place. I also learned about a concept called ‘dérive‘ – which was an interesting way to see and explore spaces around you in a new perspective.
