Day 3 of Berlin was a rollercoaster of emotions. We started the day by going to watch two documentaries on the Berlin war era that described the structure of the wall and why it was so deadly to escape the wall for most people that attempted. They were both short but very impactful to think about when it’s put into perspective the way it was in the videos. We then proceeded to have a guided walking tour through the Berlin Wall memorial with a tour guide who told us the historical sights and significance of certain places at the memorial.

It consisted of traces of the wall for people to see, historical buildings that were kept for historical purposes, and a wall of people who failed to escape the wall. The day ended with us going to a secret prison in east Berlin with a guided tour by a former inmate who shared his story of what it was like during the Cold War era. We were walked through the different cells and rooms of the prison, each having its own feeling of unease and historical significance. We left the tour feeling impacted and heavy in our hearts.
